Sierra, home of the legendary "Half-Life" series, are back with a bang, entitled "F.E.A.R."...
Even for themselves it must have been hard to do this game as people will always compare new ego shooters to Gordon Freeman's adventures.
"Half-Life"'s atmosphere is simply unique in the first person shooter genre, and maybe this is why "F.E.A.R." doesn't even try to copy it.
In some way, the atmosphere of "First Encounter Assault Recon" is even better as the programmers managed to combine an intelligent action game with creeps giving surroundings that often remind of "Resident Evil" or "Silent Hill".
An unidentified paramilitary force infiltrates a multi-billion dollar aerospace compound, taking hostages but issuing no demands.
A special forces team is sent in by the government to contain the situation, but contact is severed as an eerie signal interrupts radio communications.
When the interference subsides moments later, the team has been obliterated.
Live footage of the massacre shows an inexplicable wave of destruction tearing the soldiers apart before they can even react.
On your way to clear up the mess, you soon get confronted with crafty enemies who don't think about simplyfying your mission. The game teems with creepy scenes, dark environs and countless shocks, wrapped in perfect graphics and sound.
Not does just the game remind of a movie like "Seven", also the bonus material is equally good as most DVDs' ones.
Containing interviews, commentaries or "Behind The Scenes" goodies, the title's presentation is exemplary and only gets beaten by the also available "Director's Edition".
Get it but be aware of the fact that you could end up wetting yourself in front of the computer...
